ABOUT THE POSITION/DEPARTMENT:
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) is the national non-profit organization representing the state and territorial public health agencies of the United States, the U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia. ASTHO’s members, the chief health officials of these jurisdictions, are dedicated to formulating and influencing sound public health policy, and to assuring excellence in state-based public health practice.
The Analyst, Environmental Health, assists the Director, Environmental Health, with project deliverables for federally funded environmental health projects focusing on safe water, food safety, and environmental public health tracking.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Executing the activities of cooperative agreements on environmental health initiatives in conjunction with the Director, Environmental Health and the Environmental Health team.

Representing ASTHO at meetings and conferences; domestic travel required.

Providing input into reports and cooperative agreements and assisting with report preparation.

Conducting research to support environmental health policy initiatives and program activities.
-
Consulting with internal and external subject matter experts in developing written materials.

Responding to requests for assistance and information from members, affiliates, and national organizations.

Handling tasks to support committees, taskforces, and work groups, such as meeting planning and logistics, setting up conference calls, and committee/workgroup mailings.

Tracking and analyzing appropriate state and federal policies, programs and legislation pertaining to environmental health.

Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating electronic information to support the needs of state health agencies.

Conceptualizing and managing assigned deliverables independently including organizing peer-exchange meetings and creating informational resources such as issue briefs and toolkits.

Drafting and editing newsletter material and overseeing timely production and distribution, as required.

Assisting with the evaluation of project activities and outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS
-
Master's Degree, 3 years of prior related experience in public health, public policy or related field. State or local public health, environmental health, or association experience desirable,
-
Knowledge of federal and state laws and administrative regulations relating to the administration and management of applicable programs utilizing federal and state funds.

Ability to research, track and analyze appropriate issues and legislation at federal and state levels using abstract concepts.

Strong written and oral communications skills.

Ability to exercise own judgment and occasionally consider different courses of action to get the job done. Duties are of a complex nature which requires judgment for which there is no precedent.

Strong analytical skills.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment, manage multiple priorities, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Knowledge of word processing applications such as MS Word, and other software applications (e.g., spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, etc.)

Strong interpersonal skills.

Ability to communicate tactfully and diplomatically with public and internal contacts.

Ability to travel within service area.

Ability to develop project measures of success, analyze progress, evaluate outcomes, and forecast needs.

Ability to track and analyze related project issues and legislation at federal and state levels.

Ability to work with large networks and to represent ASTHO at meetings and conferences on project-related issues.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment, manage multiple projects and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, basic knowledge of other software applications (e.g., database, desktop publishing, etc.) and HTML and/or Web page design.
