National Coalition Joins Together to Support NCEH Funding

DENVER — The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) has joined 13 other organizations and associations to support the 2015 fiscal appropriation activities of the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center of Environmental Health (NCEH). While environmental factors account for roughly a quarter of the world’s current disease burden and 23 percent of all deaths, NCEH funding remains below 2010 levels.

The coalition of national organizations active in public and environmental health was formed to support adequate funding levels for key federal agencies, suggesting both priority areas as well as specific funding recommendations for the NCEH Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

Some of the priority areas identified by the CDC where current funding levels fall short include:

  • Reducing the prevalence of asthma morbidity and mortality
  • Protecting children from the health risks of hazardous exposures including lead
  • Ensuring safe drinking water
  • Using laboratory science to detect, diagnose, and prevent environmental disease
  • Addressing environmental health aspects of transportation and other components of community design
As the appropriation process for FY 15 begins, the coalition has contacted all members of both the House and Senate appropriation sub-committees having jurisdiction over the CDC budget.
