About the Position

Florida Atlantic University's Environmental Health and Safety department is seeking a Director, Environmental Health and Safety, Boca Raton, FL.

The Director, Environmental Health and Safety will plan, develop, implement and monitor environmental health and safety policies, programs and initiatives for the University in collaboration with administrators, faculty, researchers, staff and students, and in accordance with Federal, State and local regulatory and University requirements and standards.

Will plan, direct, administer and evaluate departmental operations, including budgets/fiscal management, to achieve and maintain the most effective and efficient processes and functions in accordance with short-term and long-term University vision and strategic plan.

Administer, direct and evaluate departmental human resources functions to maximize employee productivity and performance. Will also provide strong leadership within the department to promote harmony, high morale and a cooperative spirit.

Serve as the University's Radiation Safety Officer.

Foster a customer-service oriented environment and provide personnel with appropriate training.

Work with appropriate units and external parties to develop, negotiate, administer and evaluate appropriate contracts.

Work cooperatively with Facilities Management on the design, construction and maintenance of structures and infrastructure systems as they relate to environmental health and safety issues.

Oversee departmental educational, training and outreach activities such as new-hire orientation, staff in-service day training, etc. and participate as appropriate in in-house and external educational, training and outreach activities.

Recommend and participate in the development of University policies and procedures as appropriate, including serving on University planning and policy-making committees, such as the University Safety Committee and the University Sustainability Committee.

Generate reports as required or appropriate and brief groups, such as senior administration, as required on environmental health and safety issues.

Perform all other duties necessary to accomplish environmental health and safety objectives as assigned. 


A Master's degree from an accredited University and six years of increasingly responsible management and supervisory experience in several areas of environmental health and safety at an institution of higher education or similar environment; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Chemistry, Biology, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Engineering, or closely related field and ten years of increasingly responsible management and supervisory experience in several areas of environmental health and safety at an institution of higher education or similar environment required.

A Master's degree and University experience preferred.

Must currently hold at least one of the following credentials: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Professional Engineer (PE).

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to exercise a collaborative approach to problem-solving complex issues across a wide range of constituencies in a diverse University community required.

Strong skills in developing educational and training programs, and the ability to demonstrate independent judgment and leadership skills are also required.

Must possess in-depth knowledge and understanding of Federal, State, local and higher education regulations, guidelines, standards, principles, procedures, and associated reporting requirements regarding, but not limited to, the following: accident prevention, risk management, environmental compliance, emergency response operations, occupational health and safety, hazardous materials management, environmental sanitation, asbestos management, fire prevention, food and pool safety, storm water management, air emissions, and indoor air quality.

Valid driver's license required.
