Public Health Advisor 3 -- Food Safety Specialist 

About the Position

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) works to improve the health of the people in Washington State by identifying, assessing, and reducing exposures to a wide variety of environmental health hazards associated with shellfish, on-site sewage systems, school environments, water recreation facilities, and retail food facilities.

Duties include:

  • Leads the Department's food recall activities and the inspection of various state facilities.
  • Develops and provides training to various stakeholders on contemporary food safety issues.
  • Provides technical assistance to local health agencies and various public and private sector stakeholders regarding retail food safety issues.
  • Assists local health jurisdictions with foodborne disease outbreak response.  


  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental public health, food science, environmental science, or a closely allied field.
  • Four (4) or more years (full-time equivalent) of progressive experience in a food safety program including:
    •   Interpreting food safety regulations and statutes and providing technical assistance regarding food safety hazards or issues.
    •   Conducting food safety inspections and foodborne outbreak investigations and writing comprehensive reports.
    •   Developing and presenting training and educational outreach on food safety topics to a broad scope of stakeholders.
    •   Participating in the development of food safety guidance, best practices, policies or rules regarding environmental public health hazards or issues.
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Desirable Qualifications

NOTE:  Experience may have been gained concurrently.

  • Registered as a Sanitarian in either Washington State or by the National Environmental Health Association
