About the Position
The Illinois Department of Public Health, Office of Health Protection, has an opening for an Environmental Health Specialist III, Option 3 in the Springfield Central Office. This individual is responsible for conducting a variety of complex and professional activities in the Vector Control Program including monitoring and control of disease vectors and hosts, such as mosquitoes, ticks, and vertebrates. This individual also would oversee the distribution of grant awards to local health departments regarding West Nile virus, Zika, and other vector-borne diseases.
The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 30 semester hours in physical and/or biological sciences. In addition, six semester hours of specific coursework in entomology, vertebrate zoology, environmental health studies, environmental biology, organic chemistry or biochemistry or equivalent short courses in these or closely related areas should be indicated on the application. Three years of professional experience in environmental health is also required.
Requirements for this position include the ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion, and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Requirements also include a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel. Excellent computer skills and work experience in Microsoft software products including, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc., is highly desirable.
