Ensuring Your Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Program Produces Effective and Sustainable Infrastructure Thursday, December 14, 2017, Noon – 2:00 p.m. Eastern (2 PDHs) Robert Rubin, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor, North Carolina State University Claude Goguen, P.E., LEED AP, NPCA

As the decentralized on-site wastewater treatment industry continues to grow and seek public funding, the importance of effective program management is amplified. Health and environmental officials play a significant role in ensuring sustainable management approaches are used at all levels. This course will provide decentralized wastewater management regulators an overview of key focus areas, developing trends and technologies. The topic of site and soil conditions will be discussed. Are they suitable for low maintenance systems? If not, what alternative treatment and dispersal systems can be used? Responsible systems and septage management will be examined. The topic of stormwater treatment in wastewater systems will be discussed.

Suggestions for department training will be shared. The course will end with a focus on septic tank watertightness and key things to look for to ensure the system is not compromised by a leaky tank.

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:

Identify key components of any sustainable, decentralized wastewater management program Propose three ideas to further involve stakeholders in decentralized wastewater management Describe three things that every set of decentralized wastewater treatment rules and regulations must contain Evaluate effective strategies for internal training Define five essentials of a watertight septic tank
