HHS Brochure: Healthy Homes Specialist working with homeownerA Professional Credential From NEHA

Since 1937 NEHA has been leading the way for practitioners to achieve a set of defined competencies, evidenced through testing and maintained through continuing education. These benchmarks of excellence have become the gold standard in recognizing those who are uniquely equipped to handle the wide breadth of environmental health issues. NEHA’s long-standing history in credentialing means that our standards are high and that individuals with a NEHA credential have mastered a body of knowledge and acquired practical experience to perform relevant work responsibilities.

As an impartial, third-party endorsement of an individual’s professional knowledge and experience, a credential stands in support of a candidate’s resume and professional references. It serves as verification that a professional has achieved a baseline level of competency in his or her subject matter.

Healthy Homes Specialist (HHS) Credential

Together with the National Center for Healthy Housing, we created the Healthy Homes Specialist (HHS) credential. The first and only credential of its kind, the HHS credential signifies that an individual understands the connection between housing hazards and health, has demonstrated competency in these principles, and knows how to put them into practice in homes. This designation signifies that HHS credential holders are experts who work with families to identify problems that threaten their health and well-being and make recommendations for resolving these problems.

Be the Key to Healthier Homes

HHS credential holders understand the connection between housing hazards and health. This special designation signifies that you are an expert who works with families to identify problems that threaten their health and well-being and make recommendations for resolving these problems.

The HHS credential signifies that an individual has demonstrated competency in the seven principles of healthy housing and how to put them into practice in homes. HHS credential holders are experts in keeping homes:

  • Dry
  • Clean
  • Pest-free
  • Contaminant-free
  • Ventilated
  • Safe
  • Maintained

The HHS exam tests your understanding of the connections between health and housing, enabling you to take a holistic approach to identify and resolve these problems.
