Assistant/Associate Professor - Environmental Health Sciences

About the Position

The School of Health Sciences invites applications for two nine-month fixed term or tenure-track positions at the assistant or associate professor level in the Environmental Health Sciences Program to begin August 2019. Applicants with a doctoral degree can be considered for the tenure-track faculty lines and are expected to have a well-defined scholarly/research agenda. Responsibilities of the position include: teaching undergraduate courses and laboratories that support the Environmental Health Sciences curriculum; engage in productive scholarship (research) for the tenure-track line; advise and mentor students in collaboration with the Advising Center; provide meaningful service to the university, profession, and community.

The Environmental Health Sciences program is a National Environmental Health Science & Protection Council (EHAC) accredited program. The Environmental Health Sciences program is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and students. Candidates with a history of, or strong potential for, effective undergraduate teaching, and a commitment to service within the university and broader regional community, will be considered. The School of Health Sciences offers undergraduate programs in Athletic Training, Emergency Medical Care, Environmental Health, Integrated Health Sciences, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Recreational Therapy. The Master of Health Sciences graduate program offers concentrations in Emergency Medical Care, Health Education, and Health Management. Additional programs within the College of Health and Human Sciences include Communication Sciences and Disorders, Nursing, Physical Therapy and Social Work. A collaborative environment conducive to interdisciplinary teaching, scholarship and service exists within the School and College of Health and Human Sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the vision and mission of the Environmental Health Sciences Program, along with the School, College, and University (https://www.wcu.edu/WebFiles/WordDocs/strategicplan.pdf https://www.wcu.edu/discover/about/wcu-2020-plan/).
  • Develop and deliver courses within the Environmental Health Sciences Program.
  • Mentor and advise students in collaboration with the Advising Center with regard to academic progress and professional development.
  • Engage in scholarly activities and creative contributions within the profession based upon the Boyer Model of scholarship for the tenure track position
  • Provide service to the university, profession, and community.
  • Maintain currency in the academic discipline through continuing education, scholarship, and/or participation in activities within the profession, including involvement within professional organizations at the state, district and national levels.
  • Work cooperatively and collegially with all faculty and staff in the Environmental Health Sciences Program, School of Health Sciences, and across the institution.
  • Carry out other assignments and duties as assigned by the Environmental Health Sciences Program Director, the Director of the School of Health Sciences, and Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental and/or occupational health or closely related degree from a regionally accredited university
  • Prior teaching experience in the environmental health discipline
  • Ability to teach introductory undergraduate courses in environmental health
  • Research or practice-based experience in environmental health
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in environmental and/or occupational health or closely related degree from a regionally accredited university (degree must be awarded by official hire date) required for a tenure track position
  • Experience teaching general environmental health courses
  • Evidence of scholarly activity and research agenda
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and success
  • Demonstrated success with undergraduate mentoring
  • Evidence of service to the profession and/or community
